Arithmetic

We began as one and one

Two that came together with no plan

Then love was added to longing

And the calculations all began

Could I ever really be with you

Could one and one and one be two

You are multiplied by moments

We are divided by the sum of the parts

It's true I sometimes lost my head

And counted more than I could see

I tried to guess the answers

But guessing always failed me

Still there was the thing I knew

That one and one and one can not be two

You are multiplied by moments

We are divided by the sum of the parts

Now there's nothing I can count on

The answer found and me crossed out

Though I keep looking for a number

The solution's not in doubt

It isn't the equation I wanted to know

But one and one and one is now zero

You are multiplied by moments

We are divided by the sum of the parts

You are multiplied by moments

We are divided by the sum of the parts

I really wanted Aimee Reid to do this, and she made the song entirely her own. A beautiful performance of sensitivity and depth that allows the song to speak about resignation and impotence in the face of what looks like an immutable decision. Aimee rides the melody and raises the lyric above the limitations of the written word.
